Contingency Fund

A portion of the operating or reserve budget set aside to cover unexpected expenses that were not anticipated during the budgeting process. Contingency funds provide a financial cushion for emergencies, insurance deductibles, or cost overruns on planned projects. A common guideline is to budget 5% to 10% of total expenses as a contingency. This is separate from the reserve fund.
